As many as 10 million Americans \u2014 that\u2019s about 3 percent of the population \u2014 have some degree of this condition. Carpal tunnel can cause quite a bit of pain and discomfort, and considering how much we use our wrists in day-to-day life, it\u2019s important to address this condition if it\u2019s affecting your quality of life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Stay tuned for the essential info, including five expert-approved exercises designed to help manage pain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center\" id=\"h-what-is-it-exactly\"><strong>What is it, exactly? <\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/drbadia.com\/es\/patient-experience-carpal-tunnel-release\/\" data-wpil-monitor-id=\"545\">Carpal tunnel syndrome<\/a> happens when your median nerve, which runs along the underside of your forearm and up your hand through a tunnel of nine tendons called the carpal tunnel, gets squeezed or compressed. Experts aren\u2019t totally sure what causes carpal tunnel, but one of the leading hypotheses is that it\u2019s a type of anatomic compression and\/or inflammation around the tendons.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center\" id=\"h-symptoms-of-carpal-tunnel\"><strong>Symptoms of carpal tunnel <\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>There are many degrees of carpal tunnel syndrome, ranging from annoying to excruciating. Look out for these symptoms:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Numbness, tingling, or jolts of <a data-wpil-monitor-id=\"425\" href=\"https:\/\/drbadia.com\/es\/patient-finds-a-solution-for-severe-thumb-pain-after-years-of-failed-conservative-treatment\/\">pain in your thumb<\/a> and first three fingers<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Pain that travels up and down your forearm<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Dull, constant, or even severe wrist pain<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>New-onset grip weakness 5 daily exercises that might do the trick Before we get into the exercises, we should note that the first line of defense in managing carpal tunnel is determining that you actually have it. And the only way to do that is by seeing a professional.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center\" id=\"h-how-often-should-you-do-them\"><strong>How often should you do them?<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The recommended scheme in the exercises below was set by the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons. However, Alejandro Badia, M.D., board-certified hand, wrist, and upper extremity orthopedic surgeon is adamant you speak with a healthcare provider before starting this regimen. And if you experience any sort of sharp pain, stop immediately.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group\"><div class=\"wp-block-group__inner-container is-layout-constrained wp-block-group-is-layout-constrained\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-9d6595d7 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:70%\">\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-1-wrist-extension-stretch\"><strong>1. Wrist extension stretch<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Recommended reps<\/strong>: 5 <strong>Times per day:<\/strong> 4 <strong>Times per week:<\/strong> 5\u20137<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s some evidence that wrist extension and flexion exercises help widen the carpal tunnel a tiny little bit,\u201d says Badia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><strong>How to do it <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>1. Straighten arm and bend wrist so fingers are pointed up and<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>perpendicular to your forearm. (This should look like a \u201cstop\u201d sign.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>2. Use your opposite hand to apply pressure across your palm, pulling fingers toward you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>3. Hold for 15\u201330 seconds. Straighten arm and bend wrist down so palm is facing your body and fingers are pointed toward the floor, perpendicular to your forearm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>2. Use your opposite hand to pull fingers toward your body.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>3. Hold for 15\u201330 seconds. Doctor of physical<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>therapy and founder of Just Move Therapy Dr. Marcia Darbouze, PT, DPT, adds this move is \u201cawesome for relief.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><b>How to do it <\/b><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>1. Start with wrist in a neutral position, palm facing away from you, and fingers curled into a fist.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>2. Open your fist into a flat palm, with thumb glued against pointer finger,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>so wrist is parallel to the floor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>3. Bend wrist back toward you so the backs of your hand and fingers are facing your face.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>4. \u201cUnglue\u201d thumb, extending it as far as you can away from palm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>5. Flip entire forearm so you\u2019re now staring at palm and the underside of forearm<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>6. Use your other hand to gently pull down on thumb, giving it a nice stretch (but don\u2019t pull too hard).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>7. Start with hand in \u201cstop\u201d position, wrist neutral, and fingers straight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>2. Bend fingertips toward the floor so they\u2019re touching your palm. Hold for 3 seconds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>3. Curl fingers into fist, with thumb on the outside. Hold for 3 seconds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>4. Touch fingertips to palm by hinging at middle knuckles. Hold for 3 seconds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>4. Repeat with the other hand<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:33.33%\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:40px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group spe-box-01 has-background\" style=\"background-color:#e4f7f8\"><div class=\"wp-block-group__inner-container is-layout-constrained wp-block-group-is-layout-constrained\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center\" id=\"h-these-exercises-aren-t-for-everyone\"><b>These exercises aren\u2019t for everyone <\/b><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>According to physical therapist Lauren Jarmusz, these exercises may actually bring on some of your carpal tunnel symptoms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She recommends doing 1 rep of each and waiting 10 minutes to see if your symptoms resolve. If the pain and discomfort don\u2019t ease, discontinue the exercises and make an appointment to see your doctor.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:60px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center\" id=\"h-what-else-can-i-do-for-my-carpal-tunnel\"><b>What else can I do for my carpal tunnel? <\/b><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The protocols will vary based on your pain level but could include any combo of the following:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><b>Adjust your positioning <\/b><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At your desk 8+ hours a day? The quickest remedy for folks whose symptoms are aggravated by their job is a desk makeover.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cSet up your workstation so that the monitor is eye level and an arm\u2019s length away, the elbows are in line with the wrists, the mouse is nearby, the thighs are parallel to the floor, and the feet are planted,\u201d suggests Darbouze.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><b>Splints <\/b><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cFor early carpal tunnel syndrome, it\u2019s very common for doctors to prescribe that a patient wear a splint at night,\u201d says Badia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Why at night? Because that\u2019s when folks are most likely to knock their wrists in syndrome-exacerbating ways, he says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He adds not to wear splints all day you because you can actually risk atrophying your wrist muscles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><b>Supplements and medication <\/b><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Time to call on the old faithful NSAIDs. \u201cThe proper dosage of an over-the-counter anti-inflammatory with food before bed can help,\u201d says Badia. Ditto before a day of answering emails.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He also regularly recommends a vitamin B6 supplement for folks with mild carpal tunnel syndrome. \u201cResearch has shown it functions like a physiologic diuretic, decreasing swelling around the nerve, and so I recommend supplementing with them.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><b>Acupuncture <\/b><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m an advocate for trying acupuncture with a Traditional Chinese Medicine doctor,\u201d says Darbouze. \u201cSearch for community-based care or student intern clinics for more affordable options.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><b>Work with a physical therapist <\/b><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Darbouze recommends seeking the care of a physical therapist. Physical therapy is far more than supervised exercise. \u201cA great PT will help target the<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>weak muscles in the affected area and help you make them stronger, which can relieve symptoms.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><b>Surgery <\/b><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We\u2019re not going to sugarcoat it: <a href=\"https:\/\/drbadia.com\/es\/9-ways-to-curb-carpal-tunnel-syndrome-pain\/\" data-wpil-monitor-id=\"547\">Severe carpal tunnel <i>requires <\/i>surgery<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIf your carpal tunnel is really mechanically compressing median nerve, there\u2019s really not a ton you can do to really and permanently relieve that pressure,\u201d says Badia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But don\u2019t fret \u2014 apparently, as surgeries go, this one is a piece of cake.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cYou can do it endoscopically,\u201d Badia says. \u201cSo you\u2019ll be able to use your hand right away, so long as you\u2019re not handling anything super heavy.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><b>DIY ways to manage the pain <\/b><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Ice massages: Freeze water in a small paper cup and roll it over the underside of your wrists.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Yoga targeting the wrists: This video incorporates many of the exercises we\u2019ve discussed in this article.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><b>Typing doesn\u2019t actually cause carpal <\/b><strong>tunnel<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This surprised us too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cSaying typing <a href=\"https:\/\/drbadia.com\/es\/patient-feels-relief-after-just-2-days-of-procedure\/\" data-wpil-monitor-id=\"693\">causes carpal tunnel syndrome<\/a> is like saying walking up two flights of stairs to your apartment <i>causes <\/i>knee arthritis,\u201d says Badia. \u201cIf you already have knee arthritis, walking up the stairs every single day is going to hurt a heck of a lot more.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><b>Typing does make it worse, though <\/b><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While <a href=\"https:\/\/drbadia.com\/es\/fact-from-fable-carpal-tunnel-syndrome\/\" data-wpil-monitor-id=\"803\">typing can\u2019t <i>cause <\/i>carpal tunnel<\/a>, it can significantly worsen the symptoms, according to Jarmusz. \u201cIn the clinic, we advise patients to avoid more typing than they need.
