Now with the frightening COVID-19 pandemic that is further taxing our healthcare system – and our economy – these issues are amplified. Despite all the political debates and media coverage on healthcare policy and reform, there is always one glaring omission: feedback from the people in the trenches – the doctors and other healthcare professionals who provide care to the patients.

t's about time a physician publicly spoke out about the real state of US healthcare (from a doctor's point of view). Dr. Badia and I were orthopaedic residents together at NYU, and then I did a hand surgery fellowship at the Mayo Clinic. We share similar experiences and opinions. Alex provides an excellent and comprehensive summary of the obstacles, challenges, disillusionment, and inequities that we, as physicians, face on a daily basis when practicing medicine in the 21st century. The subtle "provider" in quotes points toward the disrespect that physicians endure, despite our extensive education and training... Read Full Review on Amazon

Dr. Badia’s “Insider account” on US healthcare “From The Trenches” details not only his journey to becoming an orthopedic specialist in the healthcare industry, but how his time working in hospitals, then running his own private practice has given him insight into some of the bigger picture issues in US healthcare like: reliance on hospitals for non-emergency situations, overcrowding in hospitals that lead to long wait times for patients and doctors, insurance hurdles that keep doctors from being reimbursed, and patients from seeking more affordable preventative care and the list goes on…I know it’s a lot, but if you really want an in-depth look at our healthcare system, I encourage you to pick it up... The book Healthcare from the Trenches, written by hand-surgeon Alejandro Badia, MD, is a critical and timely reflection on the problematics of the American healthcare system, which are now accentuated due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Skyrocketing costs in health insurance and medical treatments, and ethically flawed legal practices are some examples that denote how the healthcare system has become a profitable business more than a moral deed. In response, Dr. Badia materializes his unmasked concern about the deteriorating relationship between patients and physicians, which has been immensely affected by the interference of insurance companies... This book sat on my desk for some time before I was able to dive in, but once I did I did not want to put it down. Working in the medical industry as a medical device distributor for the past 20 years. Also, working for one of the largest healthcare organizations in America. I have seen the madness from the inside. Dr. Badia should be praised for his willingness to put himself out there. Physicians, especially surgeons, are slaves to a system that forces them to work longer and harder for less take-home pay, a government and legal system that just continually beats them into submission, and a public that only cares when they need the service of a highly skilled surgeon and they can’t be found. I fear for the future of our healthcare system and can only hope that more healthcare professionals step out of the shadow and come forward to help steer this broken system in a new direction. As Dr. Badia quoted in his book, a statement made by one of our greatest presidents. “The best way to predict the future is to create it” Abraham Lincoln You have my support Dr. Badia, and I look forward to your next chapter. Chronicling his life, education, and finally interaction with the healthcare of the U.S., the reader gets a firsthand look at how an energetic young medical student can become jaded from the tireless battling with insurance companies. Dr. Badia begins his book by describing how becoming a doctor was in his blood, and while he knew the challenges he would face in medical school, residency, and beyond, he was not prepared for how challenging it would be to give proper care while being able to paid for his work through insurance companies and our labyrinthine system... As someone who works in an area related to healthcare, I was peripherally aware of some of the issues that are contributing to the broken “healthcare” system in the U.S. However, this book really opened my eyes to the current reality. I always appreciate hearing examples, compared to a strictly theoretical discussion, and this book has many real-life examples of the perverse financial incentives, micro-managing regulations, stagnating bureaucracy, and profit-skimming by insurers that have come to completely control the relationship between the physician and the patient (except in certain specialties like cosmetic surgery), and place barriers to doing what the physician decides would be best for the patient. I think most readers will be shocked to read about examples of how little money many physicians actually receive for their services from insurance companies. I was also surprised to learn how common physician burn-out has become... Read Full Review on Amazon

Dr. Badia is a thoughtful leader in orthopedics. His take on integrating new advancements into his practice as a key way to improve patients outcomes is both admirable and critical. His assessment of the challenges of new tech clearly come from someone in the day to day fight. Additionally, OrthoNow represents a true answer to the eliminating the "doctor shuffle" patients experience. It is a way for patients to enter the system getting the right treatment and right referral from the start. This point of entry into the system is a game charger for patients and the ultimate care they receive. Creating this one stop orthopedic center ensures patients get the appropriate care by the appropriate doctors all while reducing costs. Kudos to Dr. Badia for his advocacy and care for patients. “Healthcare From The Trenches: An Insider Account Of The Complex Barriers of U.S. Healthcare From The Providers and Patients’ Perspective” in an insightful account of the broken American healthcare system written by orthopedic surgeon Dr. Alejandro Badia. The behind the scenes look at healthcare in America was an eye opener for sure. We hear about the system in the media but we don’t really get an idea of the extent of it. Through his experience in the healthcare field, Dr. Badia explains what is wrong with the system. He points out that many of the most critical decisions of a patient’s care are not actually made by licensed physicians, but by insurance employees possessing no medical training, or special knowledge of the diseases or conditions they are judging. Doctors have a hard time treating patients when their treatment plans are consistently being shot down by insurance companies due to cost. New treatments are denied, medicines go unapproved and an “non-medical expert” chooses what the doctors can do for a patient.... Read Full Review on Amazon

As someone who is not involved in the medical field or well-versed in its intricacies- Healthcare From The Trenches quickly brings me up to speed. Seriously, going in with a fresh mind and a few Google searches will help understand the content. Doctor Alejandro Badia explains that the practice of medicine has gotten more strenuous, complicated, and overbearing with 3rd party members (looking at you, insurance.) He has the passion as a medical worker to want to help people and improve their lives while having to fix the system. We know as consumers and patients how it is, and the kind doctor shows the other side of the story. Analyze each section of the book (there are 3.) The author talks about choosing and being a doctor, the federal government in healthcare, and a synopsis of the current situation we are facing. As Americans we can study other healthcare models and work to incorporate them here! If every other first world country is doing something, and it is working, we should 100% work towards that goal here. The people and their health should come first. This book is an amazing study during the times we live in. Unfortunately, this pandemic is not the first and will not be the last. Doctor Alejandro Badia did the right thing by producing this content and showing it to the average person to start this dire discussion. This is very well written!... Read Full Review on Amazon
