Dr. Alejandro Badia, MD, FACS, a world-renowned hand and upper extremity surgeon, is the new president of ISSPORTH (International Society for Sport Traumatology of the Hand). Hand specialists from wide-ranging countries (including the U.S., Brazil, Australia, Germany, Portugal, Italy, Norway, Estonia, and the United Kingdom), as well as sports institutions and Olympic organizations, will meet to discuss, learn, and promote new procedures and techniques in hand and wrist injuries in athletics.
The goal of ISSPORTH is to educate athletes, coaches, and physicians alike about the nuances of sports injuries in the hand and wrist. The meeting will take place in Milan, Italy on March 18, 2011. Dr. Badia states, “The understanding of orthopedic problems has increased considerably in the sports world. ISSPORTH aims to raise awareness of this by focusing on a rarely mentioned area of anatomy, the hand and wrist, which can end athletes’ careers if proper treatment is not established in a timely manner.”
Dr. Badia has recently been named one of the top 45 hand and upper extremity surgeons in the United States by Becker’s Orthopedic & Spine Review. The doctor has extensive experience treating professional tennis and golf players, N.F.L. and NBA athletes, as well as weekend warriors who acquire these kinds of troubling injuries.
ISSPORTH aims to promote the free and complete exchange of knowledge among the participating members of the society, through publications and scientific meetings, to facilitate and expand study opportunities within and between different countries. In this way, cooperation is promoted among hand surgeons, orthopedic surgeons, sports medicine specialists, hand therapists, and other medical professionals who have a strong interest in the hand, wrist, and sports-related injuries.
Alejandro Badia, MD, FACS is a hand and upper extremity surgeon. He studied physiology at Cornell University and obtained his medical degree at New York University, where he also trained in orthopedics. A hand fellowship at Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh was followed by an AO trauma fellowship in Freiburg, Germany. He actively directs international hand fellowships, is a member of the editorial board for two hand journals, and organizes an annual course in Miami for surgeons and therapists dedicated to arthroscopy and arthroplasty of the upper extremity (www.miamihandcourse.com). This international meeting is held at the famous Miami Anatomical Research Center (MARC), the largest cadaver surgical training laboratory in the world, which Dr. Badia co-founded in 2005.
In 2008, the BADIA HAND TO SHOULDER CENTER was inaugurated, a fully integrated clinic dedicated to the upper extremity that encompasses: digital radiography, MRI for extremities, a rehabilitation center, Integra, and the Surgery Center at Doral. More recently, Dr. Badia opened OrthoNOW, the first immediate orthopedic care center in South Florida, which is staffed by surgeons from the International Orthopedic Group (IOG), a group of lower extremity, upper extremity, and spine subspecialist surgeons who also effectively treat orthopedic problems in international patients. He is a member of the ASSH, AAHS, AAOS, as well as an honorary member of numerous foreign hand surgery societies.
