Lara native Kepler Orellana, who last year was the hero that returned Venezuela to the elite of continental tennis with his victory over the Uruguayan Federico Dondo on his home court, which defined the Venezuelan return to Group 1 of the Davis Cup, this time will have to watch the matches from the stands.
The young tennis player recently underwent surgery at the Hand Institute of Baptist Hospital in the city of Miami, where surgeon Alejandro Badia performed the operation using an arthroscopic (internal) technique to correct injuries to the fibrocartilage and the ligament of the Venezuelan player’s right hand.
“The operation was a complete success, although it took longer than originally planned because we hadn’t been able to detect the ligament injury and had to correct it on the fly,” stated Dr. Badia, who insisted that under no circumstances will Orellana be able to return to regular tennis training for the next three months.
“Hand Correction” The procedure included the reconstruction of the fibrocartilage and the ligament that stabilizes the two carpal bones, where internal wires were placed, which will be removed within a period of eight weeks.
The doctor introduced an arthroscope (which is a device with a camera at its tip, allowing the joint to be observed via video, with incisions smaller than 5 millimeters).
The surgery lasted 30 minutes, of which 20 minutes were spent on the tendon transfer.
